Don’t Take My Word for It…

Surprised woman accepts marriage proposal.“Hey. You. Mr. Groom / Ms. Bride looking for a photographer to capture the biggest moment of your life. Stop what you are doing, scroll to the top of this page, message George NOW and pray that he is still available. I would give this man 100 stars if I could. The experience of working together could not have been any smoother or more enjoyable.

A little background on our story – I was planning a surprise proposal to my now fiancรฉe in Newport and came across George’s work. It immediately stood out from the other galleries I had browsed, and I was blown away not only by the quality of the photographs themselves, but the thoughtfulness and thoroughness that was evident in every shoot. I sent over a request and heard back almost immediately to confirm his availability, along with a plethora of other helpful blog posts and resources to help make the moment as special as possible.

We were coming from out of state and had never been to Newport before – so being an expert on the area, George was quick to gave me a detailed run down of the ideal locations, pros and cons of each, and how to tailor our experience to achieve exactly what we were going for. It was also clear in speaking to him how passionate he was about the art of photography, and how eager he was to make this moment as special as possible for us.

When the big day arrived everything went off without a hitch (other than me missing my mark by about 30 feet out of nervousness…) – George was hidden in plain sight pretending to be a nature photographer nearby us and when I got down to one knee, he turned the camera around to us and captured the moment perfectly.

Afterward we held a mini photoshoot on the nearby grounds while we were still buzzing with excitement to capture that energy and relive the moment forever. He was able to send over 4 of our favorite photos within a few hours, and provided the remaining gallery the following day. Everything came out BEAUTIFUL.

We have not stopped getting messages from friends and family complimenting how incredible the pictures are, and cannot stop flipping through them ourselves with a smile. I cannot possibly recommend George Ross more, he is the best photographer I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Thank you again so much George for the spectacular pictures and for making this moment so special!!”

  • Last proposal before a well-earned staycation, and it went out with a pivot for the books! ๐Ÿ“ธ
Arrived 30 minutes early to scout the spot in Beavertail, and of course โ€” a beach chair (and a crowd) had claimed our exact spot. Snapped a photo, sent it to Jeremy, and crossed my fingers as I followed along, not even sure where heโ€™d go. Thatโ€™s the job: you can never guarantee a spot in a public space, so you always walk in with a Plan B ready to go.
Jeremy executed it beautifully. Eve was completely delighted, and just like that โ€” another wonderful future begins. ๐Ÿฅ‚๐Ÿ’
Time to put the camera down for a week... well, as much as I ever really do. ๐Ÿ˜„

  • Now THIS was a proposal for the ages. โ›ˆ๏ธ๐ŸŒˆ
Thunder, lightning, torrential rain, 30 knot windsโ€ฆwe had it all.
But it began like all Beavertail proposals โ€” a walk through the park in beautiful conditions to the proposal spot. Aidan dropped to one knee and Maddie was totally overcome and surprised. During the post-proposal engagement shoot, we noticed some lightning to our east over Brenton Point, not too far away. Then I looked to the northwest, behind the coupleโ€™s backs, and saw a fast moving storm. โ€œIโ€™m more worried about that one,โ€ I said. They turned around and agreed.
I kept shooting for 10 more minutes โ€” first one rain drop, then a few, then we were running for our cars in a 30 knot headwind. We all got completely soaked before ducking in for a 10 minute break while the storm blew through fast. As a cricket commentator would say, โ€œrain stopped play.โ€
After the storm passed, we ventured back out to finish the shoot and were greeted by a rainbow โ€” and to top it off, we wrapped things up under a stunning sunset!
Congratulations, Maddie & Aidan! ๐Ÿ’

  • Huge day today! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ’ Ryan popped the question to Sam at the Goat Island Lighthouse, and she had absolutely no idea it was coming โ€” total shock, total joy.
This was the first of two proposals I got to capture today, and it also happens to be my 300th surprise proposal ever! What an incredible milestone to hit at one of Newportโ€™s most beautiful spots.
Congratulations, Ryan & Sam! ๐Ÿฅ‚

  • I get asked ALL the time if I can shoot video along with stills at proposals ๐Ÿ“ธ๐ŸŽฅ Truth is, itโ€™s always felt too risky โ€” too many unknowns about how the moment will actually unfold, and my #1 job is capturing THE shot.
But after another request this week, I started thinking about the problem differently ๐Ÿค” What if I mounted my DJI Action 6 to the monopod mount on the lens I use for 98% of my proposals?
So I grabbed some parts and built this ๐Ÿ‘‡ Revision 1 is here! It needs a ball adaptor for adjustment. - that will be revision 2.
Iโ€™ve got it set to 8K so I can crop in later โ€” the tradeoff with action cams is that wide angle lens, so this gives me room to work with.
Testing it out tomorrow ๐Ÿคž If it works, Iโ€™ll have a whole new service to offer ๐ŸŽฌ

  • Closing in on number 300! ๐ŸŽ‰ Four proposals scheduled for Thursday and Friday before I head into vacation mode โ€” itโ€™s happening this week. ๐Ÿ“ธ
But first, letโ€™s talk about last nightโ€™s number 299, because it was a nail-biter. Carlos and @madison_martins took an evening walk through Roger Williams Park before dinner, planning to use the bandstand and fountain as their backdrop. Carlos had scouted the location over the weekend and sent me his recon photos โ€” we reviewed everything on a Zoom call and he walked me through his planned spot with that gorgeous bandstand view.
Then I got there in person and reality hit: beautiful vista, but the couple wouldโ€™ve been swallowed by vegetation in the shot. Time to improvise. I found a better, more open spot nearby, snapped a photo, and fired it off to Carlos with instructions. Fingers crossed the whole time. ๐Ÿคž
He nailed it. Dropped to one knee, and Madison had absolutely no idea it was coming. Total surprise, perfectly executed. Nicely done, Carlos. ๐Ÿ’

  • โ˜€๏ธ Yesterday was a scorcher at Beavertail โ€” 86 degrees, 90% humidity, and the sun was really putting in work by 3:30pm. But honestly? That heat was a huge relief for Leo, since weโ€™d been watching rain in the forecast all week. Sophia was curious why there were three umbrellas in the car... now she knows why ๐Ÿ˜‰
These two made quite the journey to get here โ€” driving up from Long Island early that morning, catching the New London ferry, stopping in Newport for lunch at the Mooring before making their way to Beavertail to take in the views.
I always arrive 30 minutes early, and good thing I did โ€” a couple had set up for the day right near the proposal spot! Quick thinking required ๐Ÿง  I snapped a photo of the scene and annotated it with a game plan for Leo. He read the signal, adjusted on the fly, and nailed it ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ’
Congratulations Leo and Sophia โ€” what a beautiful, sweaty, umbrella-adjacent start to forever! ๐Ÿฅ‚

  • Since 2011, Iโ€™ve shot exclusively on Canon EOS 1D DSLR bodies. Two retired EOS 1D Mark IVs sit on the shelf now, and for the past 10 years my workhorses have been the 1DX and 1DX Mark II. I always shoot with two cameras on every job โ€” because occasionally a camera will have an issue, and there are no do-overs. Always have a backup.
Today, I take my first step into mirrorless with the Canon EOS R3. I donโ€™t shoot sports anymore, so no need for the R1 โ€” the R3 is built exactly for the pace this work calls for.
Iโ€™ll spend the next week getting to know it before it joins me on shoots, at which point a second body will be on order.
Apparently, you can teach an old dog new tricks. ๐Ÿถโœจ

  • Proposal #297 (300 is so close I can taste it) ๐Ÿ’
Last night at Beavertail, on a hot summer night that couldnโ€™t have been more perfect โ€”Hereโ€™s the thing about this job: 80% of the proposals I shoot come with some flicker of expectation that maybe a proposal was coming in the future and the surprise is when it happens. But then thereโ€™s the other 20%. The ones that come completely out of left field. (And, only 4 people knew it was going to happen at the exact moment)
Katia was firmly in that 20%. Absolutely no idea. Zero. So when it happened, the reaction wasnโ€™t just a yes โ€” it was pure air. She jumped. She cried.
She jumped some more. ๐Ÿฅนโœจ
Wishing Michael and Katia a lifetime of love and adventure together. Congratulations, you two! ๐ŸŽ‰

And the best surprise guest of the night? Nellie the Golden Retriever, who was just as thrilled as Cory when Jeff dropped to one knee! ๐Ÿพ
Their @newportharborisland room was a quick stroll from the lighthouse, so it made for the easiest (and scenic) walk to a proposal.
We had a short delay when the arrived, since @jesspohlphotos - nice meeting you, Jess - was there working with another couple near the lighthouse โ€” but the wait was worth it.
Jeff got down on one knee and Cory was delighted - her huge smile gave it away!
Congratulations to you both (and Nelly)! โœจ๐Ÿ•
