The 2011 Providence Marathon and 1/2 Marathon The 2011 Providence Marathon and 1/2 Marathon was a great day for running in Rhode Island. The event, which was hosted by the city of Providence, attracted over 1,200 runners to compete in the full marathon and 1,000 runners to compete in the half marathon. The full marathon course started and finished in downtown Providence, and it took runners through some of the city's most scenic neighborhoods, including College Hill, the East Side, and the Jewelry District. The half marathon course followed a similar route, but it was slightly shorter. The winners of the full marathon were Tyler Sipprits (2:31:25) and Sarah Carney (2:53:23). The winners of the half marathon were Matt Flaherty (1:13:18) and Jen Rhines (1:22:36).
