5 Best Places for Family Photography in Rhode Island

A Guide for Family Photography Locations in Rhode Island’s West Bay & Jamestown

“What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” ~ Karl Lagerfeld

Best places for family Photography: Let’s talk family photos! One of the first questions I get is, ‘Where should we go?’ After years of capturing families across Rhode Island’s West Bay, I have a few go-to spots that never disappoint. Privacy is paramount in family photography so you won’t see every session here, but I’m thrilled to share the beautiful moments I’ve been given permission to publish. Not all of my photoshoots because many families remain private, and I honor them 100% of the time.

This guide is designed to help you discover the perfect location for your family’s portraits. While Rhode Island is full of hidden gems, my heart belongs to Goddard Park, Scarborough Beach, and Beavertail State Park. They’re my top picks for creating those timeless family memories because it is easy to ‘manage’ in picturesque locations.

Let’s dive in and explore the magic of these locations and a few other great options.

Scarborough Beach, North

Stress-Free Family Photos at Scarborough Beach’s North End

Best Places for Family Photography: South County’s beaches are undeniably beautiful, but my go-to for a family beach shoot is the north end of Scarborough Beach for truly special family photos. Here, away from the summer crowds, the golden hour light is gorgeous. As the evening sets, the beach quiets, creating a serene atmosphere perfect for capturing genuine moments.

I have conducted photoshoots on a variety of beaches – Narragansett Town Beach, East Beach (Westerly), Napatree Point (Watch Hill), Charlestown Beach, Roy Carpenters Beach, 2nd Beach (Newport)  and a couple of small town beaches – all gorgeous, but when you are looking for the quiet beach spot in the middle of summer, this is my spot.

Parking is manageable with a little local know-how, or using the beach parking lot, taking a stroll up the beach to this location, and dropping off family members is convenient. We have the beautiful beach, the unique dunes with their rocky features, and the captivating ruins, all bathed in the warm, golden light. Let’s create timeless memories together.

Pros

  • Beautiful beach
  • Sand, Rocks, grasses and the Windswept ruin
  • Access to the Black Point trail
  • Beside the road for drop-offs
  • Great late afternoon/evening location (for light)

Cons

  • Waste water (treated) outlet nearby
  • Can be breezy
  • It’s a beach, there will be people, but this area is relatively quiet

Goddard Memorial State Park, Warwick

Discover the Magic of Family Photography at Goddard Park

Best Places for Family Photography: Goddard Memorial State Park is a family photographer’s dream, especially for capturing precious family moments. Its diverse landscape offers many opportunities, making it popular for families seeking natural and beautiful portraits.

We typically begin at the main beach area, where East Greenwich Bay’s sandy shore and sparkling waters provide a relaxed and playful setting; this is the perfect starting point if you’re looking for candid, barefoot-in-the-sand shots.

Next, we’ll venture into the adjacent wooded area beside the bathhouse, where the trees offer welcome shade and create stunning backlit effects in the late afternoon. This natural setting provides a serene and intimate atmosphere for family portraits.

A short walk leads us to the park’s iconic bridge near the charming gazebo. This area offers a classic and timeless backdrop for family photos.

If time and energy permit, we can then drive to a few more carefully selected locations within the park, ensuring a varied and comprehensive photoshoot. Each season offers unique beauty; I know the perfect spots to capture it.

With multiple restroom facilities conveniently located throughout the park, Goddard Park is perfectly equipped for a comfortable and enjoyable family photography experience.

Pros

  • Beautiful ocean side location, park beside the beach
  • Shade and wind protection
  • Many types of photographic backgrounds
  • Road runs through the park
  • Bring your dog
  • Bathrooms

Cons

  • Warm Sunday afternoons can be busy
  • Depending on the spot, can be very ‘peopley’

Beavertail State Park: My Coastal Canvas for Your Family’s Story

Best Places for Family Photography: As a family photographer, I’m always searching for locations that offer both stunning beauty and a touch of magic. Beavertail State Park, perched at the very end of Conanicut Island, is a place that consistently delivers. It’s a 153-acre haven where dramatic cliffs meet pristine beaches, and the iconic Beavertail Lighthouse stands as a timeless sentinel.

For me, Beavertail is a photographer’s paradise. Whether it’s capturing the joy of a family playing on the beach, the tender moments of a sunset stroll, or, yes, even the excitement of a surprise proposal, this park offers a canvas unlike any other.

The sheer diversity of the landscapes here is incredible. Imagine your family photos with the rugged coastline stretching out behind you, the waves crashing against the rocks, and the historic lighthouse adding a touch of classic charm. We can explore secluded coves, capture windswept moments on the cliffs, or use the lighthouse itself as a stunning backdrop.

Beavertail isn’t just a place; it’s an experience. It’s where memories are made against a backdrop of raw, natural beauty. It’s where your family’s story unfolds, and I’m here to capture every precious moment. And, if you’re planning a proposal, trust me, this park will make it unforgettable.

Pros

  • Beautiful, rugged coastline
  • Easy parking (and free)
  • Can always find a quiet spot, even when busy
  • Bathrooms
  • Superb for picnics (bring your dog)
  • Popular location to watch the sun set

Cons

  • Can be breezy
  • Little shade on hot summer days

The Family Backyard

Family Gatherings: Captured Beautifully
Best Places for Family Photography: As a family photographer, I’ve found that some of the most cherished photoshoots come from planned family gatherings. There’s a unique energy and warmth present at cookouts, birthday celebrations, anniversaries, and other special occasions. These events provide the perfect opportunity to capture the genuine connections and candid moments that truly define a family. I love blending into the background, observing and documenting the natural interactions – the laughter, the shared stories, and the unspoken bonds that make each family unique.

Of course, no family gathering photoshoot is complete without the classic group portraits. These are the images that become treasured heirlooms, passed down through generations. I understand the importance of creating these lasting mementos, and I take great care to ensure everyone feels comfortable and relaxed. Whether it’s a large extended family or a small intimate gathering, I strive to capture the essence of your celebration, leaving you with a collection of images that will evoke fond memories for years to come.

Pros

  • Convenient
  • All of the family in one location
  • No restriction on dogs
  • No posing  – the family cab be themselves, at home

Cons

  • None to think off

Roger Williams Park, Providence

Roger Williams Park: A Providence Treasure for Family Memories

Best Places for Family Photography: Roger Williams Park in Providence is a photographer’s dream, offering a stunning array of backdrops for family portraits. This 427-acre historic park boasts seven lakes, lush gardens, and architectural gems, ensuring a perfect setting for every family’s style. Unlike the easily accessible Goddard Park, Roger Williams requires careful planning due to its busy nature and limited roadside stopping. Timing is key to capturing the best light and avoiding crowds, but the park’s diverse landscapes, from Lake Mirror’s tranquil waters to the vibrant Botanical Center, provide endless photographic opportunities.

Beyond its scenic beauty, Roger Williams Park offers unique experiences like the zoo and museum, adding an adventurous element to your photoshoot. Historic bridges and pathways, along with the Temple to Music, provide elegant backdrops for larger gatherings. More than just a park, it’s a vibrant community space where families create lasting memories. I’m honored to capture these moments within its beautiful bounds, making it a favorite location, albeit one that demands strategic planning for a successful family session

I am just scratching the surface of the opportunities for a surprise proposal in the wonderful Ocean State sharing areas where I have conducted photoshoots. Do have an idea, or need an idea? Either way please call me and we can explore your thinking.
