Getting engaged is one of the most exciting decisions you will make! The Ocean State makes the perfect backdrop for a surprise proposal. There are many beautiful places in Rhode Island to propose to that special someone.
Based on my experience shooting surprise proposals throughout the beautiful ocean state, I wrote this article. I have photographed more than 60 proposals (and counting) since the end of COVID. Many clients ask for guidance on picking a suitable location, and many are from out-of-state and visit the Newport area to have a romantic vacation and propose during their stay. The Castle Hill Inn & Castle Hill Lighthouse, Newport
Castle Hill Inn, Newport: A Historic Hotel on the Cliff
Castle Hill Inn, Newport is a historic hotel located on a 40-acre estate overlooking Narragansett Bay. It is a member of Relais & Châteaux, a group of luxury hotels and restaurants, and is one of the best places to propose in Rhode Island.
The inn was built in 1879 by Edward Augustus Stokes, a wealthy businessman and philanthropist. Stokes commissioned the architect Stanford White to design the inn in the style of a French Renaissance chateau. The inn was originally called the Castle Hill Country House, but it was renamed the Castle Hill Inn in 1903.
The inn has 100 rooms and suites, all of which are decorated in a luxurious style. It has two restaurants, the Castle Hill Inn Restaurant and the Ocean Grill, as well as a spa, a fitness center, and a tennis court.
Castle Hill Inn is a popular destination for weddings and other special events. The inn has a private beach and a marina, and the lighthouse on the grounds is a popular spot for fishing and bird watching.

Goat Island Lighthouse: A Historic Beacon in Newport Harbor
Goat Island Lighthouse, located on Goat Island in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, is a historic beacon that has guided ships into the harbor since 1842. It is also one of the best places to propose in the state.
The lighthouse is a white octagonal tower with a lantern room and a red roof. It is 35 feet tall and is made of granite. The lighthouse is automated and is owned and operated by the United States Coast Guard.
The lighthouse is a popular tourist destination and is open to the public for tours. Visitors can climb to the top of the tower for stunning views of Newport Harbor and the surrounding area.

Note: Goat Island is private property: weddings and planned engagements organized by the hotel take place in front of the lighthouse. If your proposal clashes with a wedding, you cannot go to the lighthouse until the wedding ceremony is over. There are, however, other beautiful views of the bay and the Newport bridge on Goat Island.

Cliff Walk, Newport
Cliff Walk, Newport: A Scenic Stroll Along the Coast
Cliff Walk, Newport is a 3.5-mile-long stone walkway that winds along the coast of Newport, Rhode Island. It is one of the best places to propose in the state.
The walk offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Newport Mansions. It is a popular tourist destination, but it is also a great place to get some exercise and fresh air.

Brenton Point State Park, Newport
Brenton Point State Park is a public recreation area occupying 89 acres (36 ha) at the southwestern tip of Aquidneck Island in the town of Newport, Rhode Island. The state park offers wide vistas of the Atlantic Ocean where it meets Narragansett Bay. The park lies adjacent to the Newport Country Club, part of Newport’s Ocean Drive Historic District. It is managed by the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, Division of Parks and Recreation, and is overseen by the staff at nearby Fort Adams State Park.
History. Brenton Point bears the name of Governor William Brenton, an early settler who owned the land as a large farm in the 17th century. Brenton called the area “Hammersmith,” a name which survives in the name of Hammersmith Farm, an estate on the point later owned by the family of First Lady Jackie Kennedy Onassis. In 1776, during the American Revolution, a battery was set up on the southwest part of Brenton Point as a coastal defense. Between 1876 and 1883, lawyer and businessman Theodore M. Davis built a mansion known as “The Reefs” (later “The Bells”) on the property, where he lived until his death in 1915.
The park was established in 1974 and is open year-round. The park offers a variety of activities, including hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing, and swimming. The park also has a playground and a visitor center.

Fresh Water Ponds

Roger Williams Park, Providence
Roger Williams Park is an elaborately landscaped 427-acre (173 ha) city park in Providence, Rhode Island and a historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is named after Roger Williams, the founder of the city of Providence and the primary founder of the state of Rhode Island.
The park contains seven lakes which comprise approximately 98 acres (40 ha), and it is located in the southernmost part of the city of Providence bordering the city of Cranston. It was designed by Horace Cleveland in 1878 and was constructed in the 1880s. Many of the roads, bridges, and sidewalks were built by the Works Progress Administration from 1935 to 1940. The National Trust for Historic Preservation called Roger Williams Park one of the finest urban parks in the US in their 2000 annual report.
The park is home to a variety of attractions, including:
- Roger Williams Park Zoo: This zoo is home to over 160 species of animals, including lions, tigers, bears, and elephants.
