Is Goat Island Lighthouse Public Access?

Yes — Goat Island and Newport Harbor Island are open to the public, and visitors can freely enjoy the restaurants and waterfront facilities on the island. The Goat Island Lighthouse itself, however, sits on Newport Harbor Island Resort’s grounds and can be reserved or closed off for private weddings and events.

What this means for visitors
The island’s restaurants, walkways, and harbor views are accessible to anyone, any time. But the lighthouse and the grounds immediately surrounding it belong to the hotel, so access there depends on whether the space has been privately booked.

Why this matters for a proposal
This makes Goat Island a bit of a double-edged sword for surprise proposals. On one recent shoot, a client reserved the area around the lighthouse for a full hour through the hotel’s events team, which gave us the entire backdrop completely to ourselves for a private, uninterrupted moment. It was ideal for the photos, but it also meant no one else could visit or photograph the lighthouse during that window.

What I recommend

  • If you want the lighthouse exclusively for your proposal, reserve it in advance through hotels events team.
  • If you’re planning a spontaneous proposal and don’t want to reserve the space, check with the events team ahead of time anyway to confirm there isn’t a wedding or private event already booked that would block access.
  • Either way, always confirm availability directly with the hotel before the day — the lighthouse grounds can be off-limits with little public notice so be prepared to pivot to a different spot
