Where should I park for a Newport Cliff Walk proposal?
Parking is can be notoriously difficult during peak season near the Cliff Walk, but you have two solid options depending on your plan:
Option 1: The “Mansion Tour” Strategy (Best for Surprises): One of the best ways to keep the “secret” is to book a tour at The Breakers. The mansion offers free onsite parking for its guests. After your tour, you can simply walk across the street to the Ruggles Avenue entrance of the Cliff Walk. This is a perfect “cover story”—your partner will think you’re just there for the history, and you won’t have to worry about a parking meter expiring during your moment.
Option2. Parking at Narragansett Avenue is metered seasonally, typically from May 1st through October 31st. During this peak Newport tourist season, the “Pay-by-Plate” system is in full effect to manage the high volume of visitors to the Cliff Walk and Forty Steps.
- Seasonal Dates: You must pay for parking every day between May 1 and October 31.
- Off-Season Perk: From November 1 through April 30, parking at the Narragansett Avenue meters is typically free, making the “shoulder season” a fantastic time for a more private, budget-friendly proposal.
- Hours & Rates: During the active season, meters are generally enforced from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Rates can vary, so I always recommend having the Passport Parking app ready on your phone to extend your time remotely if we decide to take more portraits!
Expert Planning Tip: Since I personally must park at Narragansett Avenue to ensure I am in position for your shoot, I always arrive early to secure a spot.
