Love Shines Bright: Colin and Tana’s Magical Sunset Proposal at Goat Island Lighthouse

Goat Island Lighthouse Proposal: History and Romance for a Newport Proposal

Goat Ilanad dLighthouse Proposal: The summer air was electric, the sky was painted in hues of gold and rose, and love was definitively in the air. This past July 4th weekend, under a truly glorious New England sunset, Colin chose the iconic Goat Island Lighthouse as the setting for his unforgettable proposal to Tana.

The venue was the stunning Newport Harbor Island Resort, a brilliant choice that offered a built-in disguise for the romantic evening: dinner. A booking at one of the resort’s acclaimed restaurants (an excellent option for lunch or dinner, proposal or not!) is the perfect, seemingly casual way to lead a partner to one of Newport, Rhode Island’s most picturesque spots.

A Beacon of History: The Goat Island Lighthouse

Nestled on the northern tip of Goat Island, the Goat Island Lighthouse is a charming and historically significant landmark. The original structure on Goat Island dates back to 1824, though it was eventually replaced by the current, picturesque conical stone tower. While the light was temporarily deactivated and later moved, the current light—a classic New England beauty—stands as a beloved beacon welcoming vessels into Newport Harbor. Its history, tied to the seafaring heritage of Newport, makes it an exceptionally romantic and meaningful spot for a life-changing moment.

The Plan: Precision, Patience, and Pineapple Club Camouflage

Weeks before the big day, I met with Colin via Zoom to meticulously review the location and develop a detailed, covert plan.

On the day of the proposal, my mission was precision. I used the Find My app to track Colin’s movements, allowing me to position myself perfectly. Colin had sent me a few pre-approved photos of himself and Tana so I could identify them instantly.

With my office departure and arrival at the resort safely communicated to Colin via text (30 minutes before the planned time), I went straight to the lighthouse area. A quick survey revealed a few stray chairs cluttering the pre-designated proposal spot—an easy fix! I moved them to clear the area, took a couple of test shots to lock in the golden light, set my camera, and retreated to my holding area to wait.

Soon, the tracking app showed them getting close. I watched as they exited the hotel lobby and walked onto the deck. As they strolled past the Pineapple Club, Colin glanced left and spotted my signal: my bright yellow Helly Hansen bag.

This is my secret weapon! The vibrant color makes me easy for my clients to spot from a distance, and a classic Helly Hansen bag in Newport, RI, simply blends in. It’s the perfect non-camera-bag camera bag.

I discreetly followed about 30 yards behind, closing the distance as they arrived at our agreed-upon spot by the lighthouse.

The Moment: Tears of Joy Under a Glorious Sky

Colin led Tana to the edge of the water, precisely positioned her, and then dropped to one knee. The moment was pure magic. Tears of joy flowed freely from Tana as she said yes to her best friend and the stunning New England sunset bore witness to their commitment.

After the heartwarming proposal, we embarked on an engagement photoshoot, taking full advantage of the remaining light. The couple were treated to a truly spectacular summer sunset, capping off a beautifully planned and executed proposal day.

Congratulations to the newly engaged couple, Colin and Tana! May your life together be as bright and beautiful as that unforgettable sunset.

Pro-Tip for Proposals:

The Newport Harbor Island Resort is an ideal location for a proposal that requires a seamless disguise. Booking a reservation for lunch or dinner offers a legitimate, non-suspicious reason to walk the grounds and “stumble upon” the lighthouse, setting the stage for a wonderful surprise.
