A Proposal Pivot: How Quick Thinking Saved Francesco & Kayley’s Newport Engagement!

Why a Backup Plan is Essential for Perfect Proposal Photography in Newport

Newport Engagement:Francesco and Kayley’s newport engagement story is a prime example of why being prepared for the unexpected—and having a solid “Pivot” plan—is crucial in proposal photography. And boy, did we have to use it late!

The Proposal Clash

The original plan was set for 3:20 PM sharp in front of the Gazebo in King Park, Newport. I always arrive 30 minutes early for proposals to give me time to make any adjustments – just in case. I arrived early at 2:40 PM, found the perfect hideaway spot, and settled in to wait.

At 3:00 PM, my heart absolutely sank. Another photographer arrived, followed by a woman setting up flowers. I walked over to chat with them and quickly learned the devastating truth: another proposal was scheduled for 3:15 PM at our planned newport engagement location!

There was no time to lose. I had no choice but to activate the “Pivot” and move Francesco to a new spot.

Executing the Pivot for the Newport Engagement

Swiftly, I scouted the immediate area for a new, private, and beautiful location perfect for a newport engagement. I found a lovely, tucked-away spot with great light, snapped a quick photo, annotated it with crystal-clear instructions (the Pivot Map!), and texted it to Francesco.

I could see that Francesco’s GPS was incredibly close. The tension was palpable: Would he see the text in time?

At 3:10 PM, Francesco and Kayley (accompanied by a couple of friends) approached the park. They paused just outside the gazebo area to watch the other couple’s proposal unfold. This gave me precious seconds.

Once the first couple was finished and clearing out, Francesco guided a completely unsuspecting Kayley away from the main area and to the new, private spot I’d chosen. He dropped to one knee, and Kayley was absolutely delighted!

A save! The Pivot worked! We had a successful newport engagement!

A Full Circle Moment

As if the drama of the last-minute change wasn’t enough, this day was extra special because of the deep connections!

Coincidentally, in May 2024, I had photographed Kayley’s sister, Bridget, when she got engaged to Conor at the Castle Hill Lighthouse—another beautiful newport engagement. I even took a family photo that day that included both Francesco and Kayley! Furthermore, I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a proposal for Francesco’s friends (Jeff and Ciara) as well!

After the beautiful moment, Bridget, Conor, and the rest of the family arrived to celebrate. It was wonderful to capture the new family portrait, featuring both newly engaged couples!

Takeaway for Planning: Always hire a photographer who has a backup plan! Proposal photography is all about expecting the unexpected when planning your perfect newport engagement.
