Newport Proposal Photographer for Hire
Capture the Moment She Says “Yes”
Why George Ross is Newport’s Trusted Choice for Proposals?
A surprise proposal is a high-stakes, “one-shot” milestone. There are no do-overs. To pull it off, you need more than just a cameraman; you need a partner who understands the intricate geography of Newport and the delicate art of remaining invisible until the moment the ring appears.
- Unmatched Expertise: Having documented over 323 proposals, I’ve mastered the logistics of Rhode Island’s most iconic landscapes. Whether it’s navigating the wind at Brenton Point or timing the light on a Bellevue Mansion lawn, I know exactly where to be to capture the perfect angle without being detected.
- A Reputation Built on Trust: My work is backed by 357 five-star Google reviews from couples who sat right where you are now. I don’t just show up and shoot; I act as your secret consultant, helping you coordinate timing and positioning so your plan unfolds flawlessly.
- The Art of Discretion: I am an expert at “the blend.” Whether I’m masquerading as a casual tourist or tucked away in coastal greenery, your partner won’t have a clue they’re being photographed. You get to enjoy a private, intimate moment, and I’ll ensure the raw emotion of that “Big Reveal” is preserved forever.

PLANNING
- Comprehensive 30-Minute ZOOM Planning Meeting: Every Newport proposal is different — whether you’re envisioning a knee-drop at the Castle Hill Lighthouse, a quiet moment on the Cliff Walk, or a sunset at Goat Island — so we’ll hold a detailed virtual session to map it out precisely. We’ll review photos, Google Maps, and drone footage of your chosen Newport location so you arrive at exactly the right spot at exactly the right moment.

I’ve photographed proposals at every iconic spot in the city — from Brenton Point and Fort Adams to The Chanler and Ochre Court. I’ll walk you through the pros and cons of each location based on your vision, the light, and the backdrop you’re after.

ON THE DAY
- Early Arrival & Final Scouting: As your Newport proposal photographer, I’ll arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled moment to conduct a final scout. Newport’s most popular spots can be busy — I’ll make sure your location is clear and set up for the perfect shot before you get there.
- Environmental Flexibility: Newport’s coastal locations are beautiful but unpredictable. If your original spot is unexpectedly crowded or inaccessible, that buffer time lets me quickly pivot and discreetly guide you to a nearby backup — without your partner ever suspecting a thing.

FAQs
How much does a surprise proposal photography photoshoot cost?
My standard rate is $395, and some locations run $445. Whether that’s good value is really your call to make, not mine, so here’s exactly what you get.
My proposal service goes well beyond taking photographs. I will:
- Help you choose the perfect spot on a Zoom call, drawing on hundreds of proposals across Rhode Island.
- Build the plan with you, covering timing, light, crowds, and where you’ll stand when you drop to one knee.
- Send you annotated maps and directions to the exact spot. Most of my clients are from out of state, and I’ve gotten very good at guiding strangers to a precise place at a precise time.
- Arrive 30 minutes early to scout, and call an audible if something’s wrong. A busload of tourists and a surprise wedding party are two I’ve had to work around at the last minute.
- Send you 5 sneak-peek photos within a few hours of the shoot, typically.
- 60+ edited photos
- Deliver your full gallery within 24 to 48 hours, typically.
You only get one shot at this moment. I think that makes the planning worth as much as the photos.
ALSO, there are no hidden charges. One price for all of the above!

All my proposal photography packages include a beautiful online gallery where you can download all your high-resolution images. This gallery is password-protected, so you can easily share it with family and friends.
While the exact number of photos varies depending on each session and the dynamics of the proposal itself, you can typically expect to receive 60+ beautifully edited images.
I focus on capturing the genuine emotion and key moments of your proposal, ensuring you have a collection of images that truly tell the story of your special day.
I know how eager you’ll be to share your amazing news (and photos!) with everyone. That’s why I always deliver 5 low-resolution images within hours of your proposal, no matter how late in the day it takes place. You can start spreading the joy and excitement immediately!
Then, within 24-48 hours, you’ll receive a link to a password-protected online gallery with all the fully edited, high-resolution images. Most of the time, I’m able to deliver these within 24 hours, because I know you’re excited to relive the moment and share the photos with loved ones
I totally understand that life can throw curveballs, and sometimes plans need to change. If you need to cancel or reschedule your proposal shoot, please let me know as soon as possible.
While there are no penalties for cancelations, I do appreciate as much notice as you can give me so I can adjust my schedule accordingly.
If you do need to reschedule, we’ll work together to find a new date that works for both of us. My ultimate goal is to capture your special moment beautifully, whenever that may be!
Having photographed over 323 proposals, I’ve seen it all—from clients popping the question 150 yards away from our agreed-upon spot, to couples so overwhelmed with excitement that they stand back up the second their knee touches the ground! Because nerves often take over in the moment, I put together my Proposal Pose & Planning Tips guide to help you navigate the moment and ensure we get the absolute best photos possible.

I have photographed more than 323 proposals since 2021. You can see most of these photo shoots in my blog – A Collection of Proposal Photoshoots – 90% of my clients are from out-of-state and have never visited the Newport area, which is the most popular location in Rhode Island, to drop a knee.
I have developed a series of tools on my website, located in the blog, to assist you in planning your proposal, include specific logistical plan for my more popular locations. Should you decide to work with me, I will develop a detailed plan for you and often will have a plan ‘B;’ just in case.
Until recently, I would use the telephone, but a visual interaction is much more meaningful; I offer all clients a ZOOM meeting to plan out the proposal. In this meeting, I will use tools such as Google maps street view, videos of the locations, tools on my blog, and a variety of photos to ensure that you know exactly how to get to the spot.
You have enough to worry about; I will shoulder some of the responsibility for your big day.
How do I choose a place for my proposal?
Whether you already have a dream location in mind or aren’t sure where to start, I’m here to help you find the perfect backdrop. Since many of my clients visit from out of state, they rely on my local knowledge to guide them—especially if you’re looking for a quiet, intimate setting away from the crowds.
Here is how we can narrow it down and plan your moment:

where I break down the pros and cons of popular spots alongside full proposal galleries so you can see exactly how each setting looks in real photos.
Find a Hidden or Quiet Spot: If you prefer a secluded, intimate moment, I can suggest quieter, lesser-known coastal and scenic locations where you can enjoy total privacy.
Choose a Meaningful Location: We can build around a place that holds personal significance—where you first met, had your first date, fell in love, or a cozy spot at home or during a family gathering.
1-on-1 Zoom Planning Session: Once you reach out, we’ll schedule a quick Zoom video call. We can talk through the details, compare location pros and cons, go over timing and lighting, and map out a seamless plan together so you feel completely confident on the big day.
Wherever you decide to pop the question, reach out and let’s start planning!
There are two important elements to a surprise proposal photoshoot.
The Proposal
It takes a bunch of planning but the goal is to capture the moment that can never be relived when your partner said yes. There may be tears of joy, there may be laughter and there may be shock but whatever the emotion your photographer should capture that.

The Mini-Engagement Shoot
Once the emotion of the proposal has subsided -a little – your photoshoot should include detail photos of the rings and couple photography; and any specific image that you would like.
That is like asking how long is a piece of string; there is no specific answer.
Most of my clients book me within two to four weeks of the proposal and some book within a few days (which I will take if my schedule permits) or many months if flights are involved.
During the busy seasons of Spring, Summer, and Fall, Summer is the busiest. During the Summer months, I find myself turning down two to three shoots for every one that I book due to me already being booked for a proposal shoot.
My advice is to book as soon as possible, especially during summer, to avoid disappointment.
How I secretly capture your Rhode Island surprise proposal.
Staying hidden depends entirely on the location, but my goal is always the same: remain completely invisible to your partner while staying perfectly positioned to capture every second of the reveal.
Because Rhode Island’s scenic spots range from busy beaches to quiet, open coastal paths, I adapt my strategy using three main approaches:
- Hiding in Plain Sight: In public areas, I blend in as a casual tourist snapping photos with my iPhone. I keep an eye on your arrival out of the corner of my eye so nothing looks out of place. To keep things covert, my camera gear remains concealed inside a bright yellow Helly Hansen bag until the exact moment you drop to one knee.
- Blending in with Locals: Wide-open beaches can be a challenge with nowhere to physically hide. In those situations, I often walk up to a local family or small group on the beach, explain what’s about to happen, and ask to hang out near them for a few minutes. People are always thrilled to be in on the secret and eagerly help shield me until the proposal begins.
- Adapting on the Fly: Sometimes the best vantage point requires a quick audible. During a proposal shoot at a quiet neighborhood setting in Matunuck, a curious resident was watching me closely because I stood out. I walked over, shared the proposal plan, and ended up sitting on her front deck chatting over a glass of wine until the couple stepped outside and it was time to shoot!
Every location is different, but you don’t have to worry about a thing. I always show up early, assess the crowd and lighting, and put a discrete, rock-solid plan in place so your partner is 100% surprised.
What if the weather does not play nice for my proposal?
One of the more significant concerns for a surprise proposal is the weather. I have had to deal with this a few times in recent weeks, and each worked out well.
If the weather looks doubtful during the week of the proposal, I will check in with the client once we are in the 24-hour weather window, at which point we will have a much better idea about what will happen. If the weather does not look good, we will check in with the client on the morning of the proposal.
In one case, we moved the proposal to an earlier time to beat the arriving weather front and for a couple of others to an earlier day.
For another, the forecast showed scattered thunderstorms all day, and on the morning of the proposal, I left it up to the client – he saw an opening in the weather. We changed the time of the proposal, and it worked out super well, but when I drove home, I hit the thunder and lightning that we had dodged.
Sometimes the solution is simple, move the proposal spot to a different location to minimize the impact of the weather. If none of the aforementioned solutions work, a large ‘white or clear’ umbrella will do the trick.
The bottom line is that I will be as flexible as my schedule permits to move the shoot around to avoid the weather, but occasionally, the weather does win.
