A Magical Foggy Cliff Walk Engagement: Aren and Lauren’s Newport Surprise
Planning a Cliff Walk Engagement: From Maryland to Newport
A Misty, Magical Cliff Walk Engagement: Aren and Lauren’s Newport Surprise
Planning a cliff walk engagement requires a perfect blend of logistical precision and a willingness to embrace the unpredictability of coastal Rhode Island weather. When Aren first reached out to me from Maryland, he knew he wanted a momentous surprise for Lauren but didn’t have a fixed location in mind.
After he reviewed my guide, “Where to Propose in Rhode Island,” we narrowed down the options. We discussed several iconic vistas, but ultimately, the winner was the historic Newport Cliff Walk.
Overcoming the Logistics: Parking and Detours
I’ll be honest: I’m often a bit nervous about using the Cliff Walk for surprise proposals. With limited parking and the absolute necessity for me to be on-site before the couple, there is zero room for error. To complicate matters, a 20-foot section of the path had collapsed back in March 2022.
After checking the City of Newport’s latest updates, I confirmed the closure was only one city block long with an easy detour. Aren and I decided to proceed, choosing a stunning spot right beside the legendary Breakers Mansion.
The Day Of: From Sunshine to “The Newport Fog”
On the morning of the proposal, it was a spectacular 76 degrees at my home in Richmond, RI. However, Newport has a mind of its own. As I drove south, I kept Aren updated on parking—which was surprisingly plentiful at Narragansett Avenue—but the weather was shifting.
By the time I stepped out of my truck, the temperature had plummeted to 59 degrees. A thick, heavy fog had rolled in off the Atlantic. In Newport, when the air is warm but the water is still in the 40s, the coast can vanish in an instant. At the Breakers access point, visibility was near zero. The moisture was so dense it felt like rain on my skin, which meant I had to ditch the strobe lights—the flash would have simply bounced off the water droplets. I took several test shots, dialing in the exposure against the “wall of white” to ensure the cliff walk engagement photos would be crisp.
The Strategy: GPS and Stealth
To pull off a surprise of this magnitude, we used every tool available. Aren and I shared our iPhone locations via GPS, an invaluable trick that allows me to track a couple I’ve never met in real-time. He even sent a selfie of the two of them so I could pick them out of the crowd.
Despite the fog, the path was busy. I kept my Canon EOS 1DX and 70-200mm f/2.8 lens hidden in a sports bag, looking like just another tourist enjoying the (lack of) view. As they approached from the north, I timed my walk to arrive at the spot just behind them.
The Big Moment: A Pastel Glow in the Mist
Aren turned to look at me—the signal. I waited for the knee to hit the ground before revealing the camera. The moment was perfect. Lauren was both surprised and delighted, her joy cutting through the heavy mist. Their choice of pastel-colored shirts was a stroke of genius; the soft colors popped beautifully against the ethereal, white backdrop of the fog.
The Photoshoot: Pivoting for the Perfect Shot
Normally, a cliff walk engagement session stays right on the water. However, with the fog so thick at the cliff’s edge, I suggested we pivot. we walked down Ruggles Avenue, which borders the Breakers Mansion. Just a few yards inland, the fog thinned out, creating a soft-focus, romantic atmosphere that felt like a movie set.
The misty conditions added a unique, dreamy element to Aren and Lauren’s portraits—a reminder that even when the weather doesn’t go to plan, Newport always provides a stunning backdrop for love.
